A wonderful ancient Moroccan silver alloy (and glass) fibula from Tiznit Province in our possession. A piece of great character. Note the ancient “native” repairs. And the difference between a piece like this and so many of its inferior modern counterparts. As for the technique: each “wormhole” one sees here is in fact an individual component (a circlet) made by hand – not the result of punching. This method of working appears to have been abandoned at least a century ago, and the piece itself is clearly considerably older again. (NB: some work of this type is being done again now, but this is clearly a very early piece.)
